Karlsruhe Municipal Archives
The Karlsruhe Municipal Archives form the city's "collective memory". Founded in 1885, it is the oldest municipal cultural institution and today, it is housed in the building of the former municipal pawnshop.

Holdings and responsibilities of the Municipal Archives
Its task consists in viewing the documents of the municipal administration, acquiring the most important ones and preserving them in the long term. In order to complete the official transmission of history, the Municipal Archives collect a range of other documents, providing interesting information on the city's past and present, such as photographs, maps, films and sound documents, newspapers, corporate or private documents.
The documents conserved in the Municipal Archives are accessible to the public and made available for use by researchers and interested persons. Moreover, the Municipal Archives fulfil a historical educational role. The institution presents research work and findings on historical issues via publications, exhibitions and events to the public. Its online services provide numerous facts and information on the city's history. With the "Commemorative Book for the Karlsruhe Jews" and other activities, the Municipal Archives also significantly contribute to the city's culture of remembrance.
